Baseball and Brewery

Brad Ring, Publisher of Brew Your Own Magazine, and his friend Carl Landau, the Founder of BYO and host of the “I Used to Be Somebody” podcast, personally invite you to join them on this exclusive New England Baseball and Brewery Adventure, featuring ballpark and brewery visits in Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts, perfect for fans of both the game and the pint.

The Joy of the Ballparks

There’s something deeply nostalgic and satisfying about watching baseball in the Northeast, where the game feels as storied as the brick-and-ivy stadiums that host it. Imagine an evening at Boston’s Fenway Park, with its Green Monster and passionate fans. Or a visit to the historic and charming minor league parks in towns like Portland, Maine (Portland Sea Dogs), Manchester, New Hampshire (New Hampshire Fisher Cats), and Worcester, Massachusetts (Worcester Red Sox), where the intimacy of the venues brings you closer to the players and the heart of the game. Each stop serves up its own regional flair, with passionate fans, unusual mascots, and crazy traditions.

The Craft Beer Connection

After the crack of the bat and a few innings in the sun, nothing complements the experience like a visit to a local craft brewery. The Northeast is packed with standout breweries, from Allagash Brewing Company in Portland to Sacred Profane Brewery and Tree House Brewing in Massachusetts. Whether you’re savoring a hazy New England IPA, a crisp pilsner, or a bold barrel-aged stout, these breweries offer tasting rooms where you can relax, chat with locals, and tour the facilities. Many are housed in historic buildings or scenic locations that add charm and character to the experience.

The Baseball and Brews Journey

Driving from city to city with your newfound friends adds a road trip dimension full of Americana landscapes: brick buildings, lobster shacks, leafy valleys, and seaside towns.  We are not in a hurry, so you’ll have time to relax on the bus, wander one of our host towns, or sip a beer on your veranda. The whole tour is a celebration of summer — baseball in one hand, beer in the other — grounded in tradition and spiced with modern craft culture.

A baseball and craft beer tour through the Northeast United States offers a rich blend of classic Americana, local flavor, and relaxed adventure, ideal for fans of both “America’s Pastime”  and a foamy pint.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1

We meet in the late morning at our hotel in downtown Portland, Maine for introductions and an overview of the tour.

We’ll then walk to a Portland Sea Dogs afternoon game. The AA team plays at Delta Dental Park at Haddock Field, a 7,000-capacity ball park that Baseball America described as “one of the jewels of the minors”. Lunch is on your own at the ballpark but don’t eat too much as we have dinner plans!

After the game we’ll walk back to the hotel for a bit of down time before we are off again to walk to renowned Gritty McDuff’s for dinner. Gritty’s was one of the first breweries in Maine and has been a staple brewpub in Portland for decades.

And for those of you with energy left, we’ll optionally walk to Belleflower Brewing. The brewery was founded and is still co-owned by the Page and Bonadies families. Brewers Nick and Zach started as homebrewers before first getting into commercial brewing and then starting their own small brewery.

Day 2

After a leisurely breakfast in the hotel, we’ll drive to Portland Head Light, Maine’s oldest lighthouse, located in Williams Park on Cape Elizabeth. While the lighthouse itself is only open to the public once a year, we can wander around the museum and walk the paths of the 90-acre seaside park.

Then we are off for a barrel tour, tasting, and lobster roll lunch at Allagash Brewing Company, home of Allagash White, “the most awarded wheat beer in the world.”

We’ll then head over to Bissel Brothers taproom for a beer. Bissel Brothers is located in a 100-year-old former railroad car repair building with indoor and outdoor seating. The brewery is well known for producing beers that are focused on a Maine style and yet challenging the status quo in the local brewing industry.

We’ll have some downtime at the hotel before walking to the Novare Res Bier Cafe, a beer haven with at least 33 tap biers and over 170 different bottled beers. Dinner is casual, with salads and sandwiches, and is a perfect complement to the beers.

The evening is free to explore the waterfront area of Portland on your own.

Day 3

We’ll enjoy a leisurely morning for you to sleep in or wander around the city. We’ll then start out by walking to Oxbow Blending & Bottling for a tour and tasting. This location is where the brewery blends and bottles all of its aged beers, using hundreds of oak barrels and dozens of stainless steel tanks. The facility has a partnership with nearby Duckfat, which gets its name from its famous Belgian-style french fries, fried in duck fat.

We then say goodbye to the amazing city of Portland, with our next stop being the small Sacred Profane Brewery in just-as-small Biddeford, Maine. Sacred Profane brews lagers based on traditional Czech methods and has only two Czech-style lagers on tap.

We then continue our drive to Manchester, New Hampshire, where we check into our hotel and have a bit of time to rest and recuperate. This evening we’ll take in a New Hampshire Fisher Cats game. The Fisher Cats are another AA team. Dinner is on your own at the ballpark – one option for you is the Samuel Adams Brewhouse behind the left field wall.

Day 4

After breakfast in our hotel, we’ll pack up and check out to make our way to Tree House Brewing in Charlton, Massachusetts. Like other breweries we have already visited, Tree House Brewing started as a small brewery – located in a red barn, in fact. Based on the success of its beers, it now operates six different brewing facilities. The main Charlton location also houses a distillery and coffee roastery.

Our next stop is Wormtown Brewing in Worcester, Massachusetts. Their year-round beers focus on IPAs: one IPA, two Hazy IPAs, and one double. They also brew a number of seasonal ales plus have some taproom exclusives. We’ll enjoy beers with lunch served by Taco Grato at the brewery.

After lunch we’ll check into our Worcester Hotel and have some downtime. It is then off to the AAA Worcester Red Sox, affiliate to the Boston Red Sox. We’ll eat dinner at the ballpark with our all-you-can-eat buffet featuring classic ballpark favorites like juicy burgers, sizzling hot dogs, creamy mac and cheese, and more.

Day 5

After breakfast we will check out and move once again. This time we are headed to the big city and the big leagues: Boston and the Red Sox. Our first stop is historic and famous Fenway Park, “America’s Most Beloved Ballpark” since 1912. We are treated to an hour-long tour of the stadium well before the actual game begins.

After the ballpark tour, we’ll walk to Mighty Squirrel Brewing for lunch and a beer. The Fenway location is blocks from the stadium and often has 20 beers on tap. They have a full kitchen with pizza, salads, tacos, and more, so there is plenty to choose from for lunch.

After lunch we’ll do a guided walking tour of Boston so we can get our bearings and learn a little history about this fascinating city. We then check into our hotel, rest up, and head back to the ballpark for an evening game. Dinner tonight is on your own at Fenway Park.

Day 6

Baseball and BrewsToday is departure day. You are on your own to either head to the airport for your return or perhaps rent a car to continue your travels in the Northeast.

Brad was very easy going and knowledgeable about the craft brewing. He did an excellent job making the trip fun for the participants.

Carl was awesome and made the tour fun and informative. He is an excellent leader and did a good job keeping people on schedule.
