public tour or private tour

Fixed-Date Public Tour vs. Private Tour: Which One is Right for You?

By Taste Vacations, Travel Tips No Comments

Planning a culinary vacation is an exciting endeavor, but one of the first decisions you’ll need to make is whether to join a fixed-date public tour or opt for a private, choose-your-own-date tour. Each option offers unique advantages depending on your travel style, flexibility, and the kind of experience you’re looking for. Here’s a breakdown to help you decide which type of tour is the best fit for your next foodie adventure.

What’s the Difference Between Fixed-Date and Private Tours?

At Taste Vacations, we offer both fixed-date public tours, where you join a small group of like-minded travelers on a scheduled itinerary, and private tours, where you pick your own dates and travel exclusively with your chosen group.

Here’s a closer look at how they compare:

Fixed-Date Public Tour

  • Set departure dates
  • Join a group of fellow food and wine enthusiasts
  • Pre-planned itinerary with built-in group experiences
  • Small group size for an intimate yet social experience
  • Great for solo travelers, couples, or small groups looking to meet new people

Private Choose-Your-Own-Date Tour

  • You pick the travel dates that work for you
  • Exclusive experience for your private group
  • Flexibility to customize aspects of the itinerary
  • Ideal for families, friend groups, or special celebrations
  • More control over the pace and style of your trip

Why Choose a Fixed-Date Public Tour?

A fixed-date public tour is a great choice if you:
Enjoy meeting new people – Travel with other like-minded food and wine lovers, making new friends along the way.
Want a hassle-free experience – The itinerary, logistics, and expert guidance are all taken care of. You simply book and show up!
Are traveling solo or in a small group – Perfect for individuals, couples, or friends who want to join a curated group experience.
Like a structured itinerary – These tours have a thoughtfully planned schedule, ensuring you experience the best food, wine, and cultural highlights without the stress of planning.
Want a cost-effective option – Sharing costs with a group can sometimes make the trip more affordable compared to booking a private tour.

Why Choose a Private Choose-Your-Own-Date Tour?

A private tour is the way to go if you:
Want full control over your schedule – Choose the dates that fit your calendar rather than working around a set departure date.
Prefer a private experience – Whether it’s a family trip, a friend reunion, or a milestone celebration, you’ll have the entire tour to yourselves.
Like customization – While the core itinerary remains the same, private tours allow for special requests and modifications to better fit your preferences.
Travel at your own pace – If you’d rather linger over a wine tasting or explore a local market in more depth, you’ll have more flexibility to do so.
Are celebrating a special occasion – A private tour is perfect for birthdays, anniversaries, or any memorable event where you want a more personalized experience.

Which Tour is Best for You?

If you love meeting new people and want a seamless, expertly guided experience, a fixed-date public tour is a fantastic option. If you prefer a more personalized, flexible, and exclusive experience, a private tour may be the perfect fit.

five myths about wine tours

Five Myths About Wine Tours—And Why They Are Wrong

By Taste Vacations, Wine No Comments

Wine + Travel can equal an unforgettable vacation. But, organized wine tours may feel intimidating for a variety of reasons—some of which are just misconceptions! Here’s five myths about wine tours— and why we think they are flawed.

1. You Have to Be an Expert to Enjoy a Wine Tour

This is absolutely not true! The number one reason people travel in general is to learn and experience new things. Essentially, a wine tour’s purpose is to learn more about the vineyards, wineries, varietals, climate, cuisine, and even the history and culture of a specific region.

What better way to learn about wine than through a hands-on experience? You don’t need to be a wine connoisseur to enjoy a wine tour. In fact, many people embark on these tours precisely because they want to expand their knowledge and appreciation of wine.

2. Wine Tours Are Expensive

This one can be true for some wine tours—but if you do your research, you can find ones that are comparable to any group tour experience. We offer a variety of wine tours to fit a range of budgets.

For instance, our Washington Wine Tour is $3300 for a 5-day private trip with a personal wine guide. Or if you have more room in your budget and your calendar, you can take a 9-day Chile & Argentina Wine Tour for $5850. There are many affordable options out there that provide excellent experiences without the hefty price tag.

3. The Only Places to Visit on a Wine Tour Are in California or France

Yes, Napa, Sonoma, and regions in France like Champagne or Bordeaux are extremely well-known for their wines—but that doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy a wine tour to a lesser-known region. In fact, you may enjoy the novelty of a unique destination even more.

When you seek out the smaller wine regions, you begin to feel the passion of wine and winemaking. You can usually spend some quality time with the people behind the bar or even in the vineyards or cellars. You get to experience how the wine is intertwined with the local culture. Plus, every wine region typically has one or two varietals they are known for, so you won’t be lacking in good wine either. Regions like the Willamette Valley in Oregon, the Barossa Valley in Australia, and even emerging regions like the Finger Lakes in New York offer unique and enriching wine experiences.

4. It’s Going to Be All About Wine 100% of the Time

If you are booking a one-day wine tour, then yes, your tour may be all about the wine. But if you are looking for a multi-day wine tour, you can find options that blend a few different interests into a fun and engaging itinerary.

For instance, on our Tuscany Food & Wine Tour, you’ll not only taste some of the finest wines this region has to offer, but you’ll also enjoy truffle hunting with a local agriculturalist, learn from a chocolatier and coffee roaster at an Italian cafe, and visit several UNESCO World Heritage sites. Though we love to learn about wine, we try to also provide a fuller picture of the region’s cuisine and culture. These experiences enrich your journey and make it more memorable.

5. People on Wine Tours Are Pretentious

Yes, there are pretentious people in the wine industry—we know, we’ve met them. But, that doesn’t mean everyone is. We’ve met far more passionate people who are genuinely excited to meet visitors and share their knowledge and enthusiasm about their wines.

We’d like to think Taste Vacations fits into the latter category. We are serious about creating memorable wine vacations but like to keep things casual and fun. When researching a wine tour operator, pay attention to how they describe their tours. If it sounds pretentious online, there’s a good chance the tour will be that way too.

Wine tours are a fantastic way to explore new regions, learn about wine, and immerse yourself in local culture. Don’t let these myths hold you back from embarking on what could be a truly unforgettable journey. Cheers to your next wine adventure!

Maybe I'll do that someday

Maybe I’ll do that Someday….

By Taste Vacations, Travel Tips No Comments

We are excited to feature a guest post from Carl Landau, host of the popular I Used to be Somebody podcast and Diana Landau the content wrangler and editor for Pickleball Media, who together are also co-authors of the Amazon best-seller Pickle for Dummies. We met Carl and Diana last year when they signed up for a Taste Vacations trip to South Africa, which has evolved into a partnership to create The “I Used to be Somebody World Tour” with the first stop in Tuscany in September and a trip to Portugal in the spring of 2025.

Why do we all do it?! We think about doing something that interests us and then put it off, always for “another day.” We all tend to talk ourselves out of doing things we really want to do. It’s way easier to stay within your comfort zone. I talk about this all the time with my guests on the I Used to be Somebody podcast. You want to do something but it takes too much time. Or costs too much money. Or it’s something new and you don’t know what it’s going to be like. You can easily talk yourself out of anything!

But it’s better at any age to take stock of things. Ask yourself: Realistically, how much time do I think I have on this planet? How many years am I going to be healthy? When else am I going to have the time? If I don’t spend money now on something I really want to do, when am I?

All this hit me 4 years ago when I started our podcast and newsletter. And I’m saying “yes” to a lot more things than I ever have before.  For my wife and me, it’s been travel. We’ve been traveling like crazy and loving it. We’ve learned so much about other countries and cultures. The trips are sort of addicting, (like pickleball?). Both good!

South Africa Wine & SafariJust last month we took the plunge and went on our first small group tour with Taste Vacations to South Africa. The trip blew our minds. We learned about the people, the culture, the landscape, the food, the wine, and the ANIMALS! Like anyone, we were a little nervous doing something so new and going such a long way—those nagging little thoughts about spending too much, the long journey to get there—but we did it anyway and we are so so glad we did. At some point, you just have to say “F*&% it! I am doing it!” Making your dreams a reality is 100% worth it!

It’s one of the reasons why we decided to start hosting vacations with Taste Vacations and their sister company Zephyr Adventures. We’re launching our “I Used to be Somebody World Tour“. Starting in Tuscany in 2024, then heading to Portugal in 2025. We’ve also collaborated to help create Zephyr Adventure’s first pickleball tour with the Arizona Pickleball Adventure in October of 2024. We really want to travel the world. We’ve discovered we like meeting these strangers on the tour who become our new friends. Many are going to be lifelong friendships.

I know you’ve heard it before, but…life is truly short! Instead of ‘maybe I’ll do that someday’ you just need to go for what you want and make it happen.
