Did you know? Washington State is the second largest wine-producing state in the U.S. and is home to a thriving wine industry, with over 1,000 wineries and vineyards spread across the state.  Two of the most notable wine regions in Washington are the Red Mountain AVA (American Viticultural Area) and the Walla Walla Valley, home to over a combined 165 wineries. Discovering the Gems of Washington State Wine Country: Col Solare, Woodward Canyon and more, offers something for everyone.

Red Mountain AVA

Located in the southeastern part of the state, the Red Mountain AVA is known for its dry, warm climate and rocky, well-draining soil, which are perfect conditions for growing high-quality wine grapes. The region is home to over 45 wineries and is particularly known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah wines. According to Red Mountain AVA, Red Mountain is one of the most densely planted AVA’s with 57% of the AVA currently planted.

One of the standout wineries in the Red Mountain AVA is Col Solare winery. Col Solare is a partnership between Château Ste. Michelle and Italy’s Marchesi Antinori. The winery produces high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot wines and has received numerous awards.

Walla Walla Valley

Just to the east of the Red Mountain AVA is the Walla Walla Valley, which is known for its wide variety of wine grapes, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Sangiovese. The region has over 120 wineries and is particularly known for its small, family-owned operations.

Some of our favorite family-owned and operated wineries are Woodward Canyon, founded in 1981, the winery is known for its high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay wines, Chinook Wines, located in the Columbia Valley AVA. Founded in 1993, the winery is known for its high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay wines. Another favorite is Northstar Winery, also located in the Columbia Valley AVA, and founded in 1992. It offers incredible views and is a perfect place to sit and sip its high-quality Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah wines. Last but not least, Valdemar Estates located in the Yakima Valley AVA. This winery is owned by a family that has been making wine since 1889 in Rioja, Spain – another one of our favorite wine destinations!
