11 Unusual Wine Trivia That Will Change How You Enjoy Wine

By Taste Vacations No Comments

Welcome, wine enthusiasts and curious readers, to a journey through the lesser-known mysteries of the world of wine. Whether you’re a seasoned connoisseur or a casual sipper, prepare to uncover intriguing facts via this unusual wine trivia—hopefully it will deepen your appreciation and enjoyment of this beloved beverage.

1. The Science of Wine Legs

Have you ever noticed those streaks, or “legs,” that form on the inside of your wine glass after swirling? Contrary to popular belief, these legs do not indicate the quality or alcohol content of the wine. Instead, they are caused by the phenomenon known as the Marangoni effect, where differences in surface tension between water and alcohol create these patterns.

2. The Myth of Wine Diamonds

Ever heard of “wine diamonds”? These tiny crystals sometimes form in wine, particularly in white wines that have been chilled. They are harmless tartaric acid crystals that precipitate out of the wine when exposed to cold temperatures and do not affect the taste or quality of the wine. In fact, they are a sign of minimal processing and can indicate a well-crafted, natural wine.

3. The Oldest Bottle of Wine

The oldest bottle of wine dates back to around 325 AD and was discovered in a Roman sarcophagus in Germany. It is now housed in the Historical Museum of the Palatinate in Speyer, Germany.

4. Let’s Toast! Why?

The practice of toasting with wine dates back to ancient Rome, where clinking glasses together was believed to ward off evil spirits. Today, toasting is a common ritual during celebrations and social gatherings.

5. The Shape of the Glass Matters

The shape and size of a wine glass can significantly impact the aroma and taste of the wine. For example, a narrower rim concentrates the aromas, while a wider bowl allows for more aeration.

6. What does Terroir really refer to?

The term “terroir” refers to the combination of factors such as soil, climate, and topography that influence the character and quality of grapes grown in a specific region.

7. Wine in Japan

In Japan, there is a tradition of serving wine in a wooden box called a “masu” for special occasions. The masu is filled to the brim, symbolizing abundance and good fortune.

8. The Origins of “Sommelier”

The term “sommelier” originally referred to a servant responsible for transporting supplies, including wine, during medieval times. Today, it denotes a trained wine professional responsible for curating wine lists and advising patrons in restaurants.

9. Fermentation and Aroma

The aroma of a wine is influenced by a complex mixture of volatile compounds, including esters, aldehydes, and terpenes, which are produced during fermentation and aging.

10. Corking Your Bottle

The “cork” in a wine bottle is traditionally made from the bark of the cork oak tree (Quercus suber). Cork is a sustainable material harvested every nine years without harming the tree, making it an environmentally friendly choice for wine closures.

11. The Science Behind the Bottle Shape

The shape of a wine bottle, with its elongated neck and sloping shoulders, is said to have been designed to prevent sediment from pouring into the glass when decanting older wines.

tipping in Europe

Mastering the Art of Tipping in Europe

By Taste Vacations No Comments

Traveling through Europe can be an exciting and enriching experience, but understanding the local customs, especially when it comes to tipping in Europe, can sometimes be confusing. Here’s a quick guide to help you navigate the art of tipping across the European countries.

Restaurants and Cafes

Restaurant tipping customs in Europe are generally more modest than those in America. Since servers typically receive a living wage, tips are viewed as a small bonus to reward excellent service or to make rounding the total bill easier. In many European countries, a tip of 5 percent is considered sufficient, and 10 percent is considered generous. Locals often simply leave some coins on the table, round up the bill, or sometimes don’t tip at all. In some European countries, service charges are often included in your bill, so make sure you double-check.

Hotels

Tipping for hotel staff can vary. In upscale hotels, it’s common to tip the bellhop 1-2 euros per bag and leave a small tip for housekeeping (1-2 euros per day). Concierge services that go above and beyond can also be tipped a few euros.

Taxis

Tipping taxi drivers is generally not expected, but rounding up to the nearest euro or leaving a small tip (around 5-10%) is appreciated.

Bars and Cafes

Tipping is less formal in casual settings like bars and cafes. Rounding up the bill or leaving some small change is usually sufficient. In Spain and Portugal, leaving a few coins is common practice.

Local Day Guides and Tours

It’s customary to tip your guide for guided day tours if you enjoyed the experience. If you’re joining a group tour, such as a two-hour city walking tour, it’s customary to tip €2–5 per person, with higher tips for smaller groups. For a private guide on a similar tour, a tip of €10–20 for the entire group is appropriate.

General Tips:

  • Always check if a service charge is included in your bill before adding a tip.
  • When in doubt, it’s best to leave a small tip than none at all.
  • Tipping customs can vary by country, so it’s helpful to research specific practices for your destination.
  • As your Taste Vacations trip guide, if you’re unsure.

Understanding and respecting local tipping customs not only shows appreciation for good service but also helps you blend in seamlessly with the local culture. Happy travels!

Bordeaux vs. Tuscany: Choosing the Perfect Wine Vacation for You

By Taste Vacations No Comments

Are you dreaming of a wine vacation where rolling vineyards, historic châteaux, and exquisite wine tastings await? Bordeaux and Tuscany are two of the world’s most iconic wine regions, each offering a unique blend of culture, cuisine, and, of course, exceptional wines. If you’re torn between these two enchanting destinations, let us help you decide which one suits your wine vacation preferences best. Hint: There’s no wrong answer!

Bordeaux: The Essence of Elegance

Why Choose Bordeaux?

Nestled in southwestern France, Bordeaux is synonymous with elegance, tradition, and some of the world’s finest red wines. Here’s why Bordeaux might be the perfect choice for your wine vacation:

  1. Grand Cru Classé Wines: Bordeaux is renowned for its classified growth wines, including prestigious appellations like Margaux, Pauillac, and Saint-Émilion. Experience tastings at historic châteaux, where winemaking traditions date back centuries. The region is the birthplace of the first known Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines and stretches from Soulac-sur-Mer and the Médoc in the north to the vineyards of Graves and Cerons in the south. Most wines from the region are red blends, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot being the grape mainstays but also including Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Bordeaux also makes fantastic white and sweet dessert wines, often from the villages of Sauternes and Barsac.
  2. Cultural Riches: Around 200 years ago, the city of Bordeaux was dubbed “little Paris” due to its distinguished 17th-century architecture and more recently has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the UNESCO-listed city of Bordeaux itself, known for its stunning architecture, vibrant waterfront, and world-class museums. Don’t miss the Cité du Vin, an interactive wine museum celebrating Bordeaux’s viticultural heritage (included in our 6-day Bordeaux wine and food vacation).
  3. Gourmet Delights: Indulge in the region’s culinary offerings, from Michelin-starred restaurants to cozy bistros serving classic French cuisine. Pair Bordeaux’s bold reds with local delicacies like foie gras, creamy cheese, and fresh oysters from nearby Arcachon Bay.
  4. Charming Countryside: Venture into the picturesque countryside dotted with vine-covered hills, charming villages, and scenic riverside estates. Enjoy leisurely bike rides through vineyards or serene boat cruises along the Dordogne and Garonne rivers.

Tuscany: A Tapestry of Tradition and Terroir

Why Choose Tuscany?

Tuscany, located in central Italy, captivates visitors with its timeless beauty, rich history, and diverse wine offerings. Here’s why Tuscany might be the ideal destination for your wine vacation:

  1. Iconic Wines: Discover Tuscany’s renowned wines, including Sangiovese-based classics like Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Visit historic wineries, many of which are housed in medieval estates surrounded by rolling hills. We start our tour in Florence, capital of the Medici, and hit major areas including Chianti, Arezzo, Assisi, and Montepulciano, with a side trip into Umbria.
  2. Cultural Treasures: Immerse yourself in Tuscany’s cultural heritage by exploring cities like Florence, Siena, and Pisa. Marvel at Renaissance art and architecture, stroll through ancient cobblestone streets, and savor authentic Tuscan flavors at local trattorias.
  3. Scenic Landscapes: Lose yourself in Tuscany’s postcard-perfect landscapes of vine-clad hills, olive groves, and cypress-lined avenues. The beautiful scenery comes from the large tracts of agricultural land placed on rolling hills, dotted with cypress trees, and crossed with the famous strada bianchi or white-colored dirt roads.
  4. Farm-to-Table Dining: Experience the farm-to-table philosophy firsthand with Tuscan cuisine that highlights fresh, local ingredients. Enjoy rustic dishes like ribollita, pappa al pomodoro, and bistecca alla fiorentina paired with robust Tuscan wines. Our 7-day vacation features truffle hunting followed by a cooking class. Yum!

Choosing Your Wine Vacation

Bordeaux may be perfect for you if you appreciate:

  • Classic French Elegance: Savouring refined red wines in historic châteaux settings.
  • Traditional Wine: Known for structured blends dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot, influenced by many terroirs and traditional winemaking practices.

Tuscany may be ideal if you prefer:

  • Timeless Italian Charm: Immersing yourself in the art, history, and scenic beauty of Tuscany.
  • Diverse Wine Experiences: Celebrated for Sangiovese-based wines like Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino, showcasing diverse terroirs and a blend of traditional and modern winemaking approaches.

Whether you choose Bordeaux or Tuscany, a wine vacation with Taste Vacations promises unforgettable experiences, guided tours, exclusive tastings, and insider insights into these prestigious wine regions. Whichever destination you decide upon, prepare for a journey of discovery, indulgence, and pure vinous pleasure. Cheers to your next wine adventure, no matter where it is!
