7 myths about group travel

7 Myths About Group Travel—And Why Taste Vacations is Nothing Like You’re Imagining

By Taste Vacations, Travel Tips One Comment

We recently asked our Taste Vacations community to complete a survey to weigh in on how they travel, what excites them most about exploring the world, and—most importantly—what they really think about group travel.

And wow, were the responses surprising! It turns out there are a lot of group travel misconceptions floating around—especially when it comes to the unique, small-group, food- and drink-focused tours we specialize in at Taste Vacations.

So we’re here to clear the air (and clear a spot in your calendar). If you’ve ever said, “Group tours just aren’t my thing,” this post is for you.

Misconception #1: “I don’t want to travel with a bunch of strangers.”

Reality: You won’t feel like strangers for long—we promise.

When you join a Taste Vacations tour, you’re not just hopping on a bus with random people. You’re joining a small group of fellow wine lovers, foodies, craft beer fans, and curious travelers—people who chose this experience because they share your passions.

In fact, many of our guests tell us that the people they meet on tour end up being one of the biggest highlights of their trip. Travel has a funny way of turning strangers into friends, especially over a shared bottle of wine.

Misconception #2: “There’s always someone annoying in the group.”

Reality: Not often in our crowd

We totally get it—group dynamics matter. But here’s the thing: our travelers tend to be laid-back, curious, fun-loving, and open-minded. It is the nature of those who travel abroad and are interested in food and drink vacations. Plus, our expert guides are trained in group dynamics and dealing with any “personalities”.

Even guests who were hesitant at first often say they’re pleasantly surprised by how much they enjoy getting to know everyone. A shared plate of tapas and a few laughs can go a long way.

Misconception #3: “Group tours are too rigid. I want more freedom.”

Reality: On our tours, everything is optional.

While we do plan an itinerary filled with unforgettable experiences—think truffle tastings, vineyard visits, local markets, and chef-led dinners—you’re never required to participate in anything.

Want to sleep in? Go for it. Want to skip the afternoon activity for a quiet stroll through town? Totally fine. Your vacation should feel like yours, and we support that. Have something in mind that is not included in the tour? Your guide can also help to figure out how to make it possible for you during the tour.

Misconception #4: “I don’t want to travel with a big group.”

Reality: Our groups are not big!

Taste Vacations group sizes typically range from 4 to 10 people. That’s it. We believe small is beautiful—and it also means we can visit the authentic, off-the-beaten-path restaurants, wineries, and villages that bigger groups simply can’t access.

No giant buses. No name tags. Just a tight-knit group of travelers exploring and making memories together, comfortably.

Misconception #5: “Group tours only go to touristy places.”

Reality: We go where real locals go.

While some of our destinations are well-known (hello, Tuscany!), we make a point of avoiding the usual tourist traps. Instead, we focus on hyper-local experiences that give you a deeper understanding of the region—like private winery tastings, dinners in local homes, and visits to places you’d likely never find on your own.

We don’t just show you a place—we help you experience it through the eyes (and taste buds) of those who call it home.

Misconception #6: “I’ve already been to most of your destinations.”

Reality: You’ve never seen them like this.

Sure, you may have visited France or Oregon before. But we bet you didn’t do it like this: no big crowds, no generic activities—just curated culinary adventures, insider experiences, and deep local flavor.

Even for seasoned travelers, our tours offer a completely fresh take on a destination.

Misconception #7: “Group tours are too expensive.”

Reality: The value is incredible—and the experience is priceless.

Yes, a guided vacation can be more expensive than a DIY trip. But what you get in return is huge:

  • Zero planning stress
  • A knowledgeable guide who handles all the logistics
  • Exclusive access to experiences you couldn’t book yourself
  • Delicious food and drink curated by experts
  • Time to truly enjoy your vacation without managing it

Our travelers tell us again and again that the experience is 100% worth it—and that a Taste Vacations tour gives them more value, more joy, and more flavor than they ever expected.

Final Thoughts: Group Travel, Reimagined

At Taste Vacations, we’ve crafted a style of travel that’s easy-going, enriching, and deeply delicious. Our tours aren’t what you imagine when you hear “group travel”—and we’re proud of that.

We hope we have debunked the 7 myths about group travel. If you’re still unsure or have questions about what to expect, we’re always happy to chat. We can help you choose the right trip for your style, answer any lingering questions, or just talk travel dreams.

Because great vacations start with good information—and an enthusiasm for exploring.

Fixed-Date Public Tour vs. Private Tour: Which One is Right for You?

By Taste Vacations, Travel Tips No Comments

Planning a culinary vacation is an exciting endeavor, but one of the first decisions you’ll need to make is whether to join a fixed-date public tour or opt for a private, choose-your-own-date tour. Each option offers unique advantages depending on your travel style, flexibility, and the kind of experience you’re looking for. Here’s a breakdown to help you decide which type of tour is the best fit for your next foodie adventure.

What’s the Difference Between Fixed-Date and Private Tours?

At Taste Vacations, we offer both fixed-date public tours, where you join a small group of like-minded travelers on a scheduled itinerary, and private tours, where you pick your own dates and travel exclusively with your chosen group.

Here’s a closer look at how they compare:

Fixed-Date Public Tour

  • Set departure dates
  • Join a group of fellow food and wine enthusiasts
  • Pre-planned itinerary with built-in group experiences
  • Small group size for an intimate yet social experience
  • Great for solo travelers, couples, or small groups looking to meet new people

Private Choose-Your-Own-Date Tour

  • You pick the travel dates that work for you
  • Exclusive experience for your private group
  • Flexibility to customize aspects of the itinerary
  • Ideal for families, friend groups, or special celebrations
  • More control over the pace and style of your trip

Why Choose a Fixed-Date Public Tour?

A fixed-date public tour is a great choice if you:
Enjoy meeting new people – Travel with other like-minded food and wine lovers, making new friends along the way.
Want a hassle-free experience – The itinerary, logistics, and expert guidance are all taken care of. You simply book and show up!
Are traveling solo or in a small group – Perfect for individuals, couples, or friends who want to join a curated group experience.
Like a structured itinerary – These tours have a thoughtfully planned schedule, ensuring you experience the best food, wine, and cultural highlights without the stress of planning.
Want a cost-effective option – Sharing costs with a group can sometimes make the trip more affordable compared to booking a private tour.

Why Choose a Private Choose-Your-Own-Date Tour?

A private tour is the way to go if you:
Want full control over your schedule – Choose the dates that fit your calendar rather than working around a set departure date.
Prefer a private experience – Whether it’s a family trip, a friend reunion, or a milestone celebration, you’ll have the entire tour to yourselves.
Like customization – While the core itinerary remains the same, private tours allow for special requests and modifications to better fit your preferences.
Travel at your own pace – If you’d rather linger over a wine tasting or explore a local market in more depth, you’ll have more flexibility to do so.
Are celebrating a special occasion – A private tour is perfect for birthdays, anniversaries, or any memorable event where you want a more personalized experience.

Which Tour is Best for You?

private beer tourThere’s no wrong choice—just the right one for your travel style! If you love meeting new people and want a seamless, expertly guided experience, a fixed-date public tour is a fantastic option. If you prefer a more personalized, flexible, and exclusive experience, a private tour may be the perfect fit.

Plan Smarter, Travel Better: When to Start Planning Your Next Vacation

By Taste Vacations, Travel Tips No Comments

Planning a vacation can be just as exciting as taking the trip itself. Deciding where to go, what to see, and what experiences await you makes the journey begin long before your bags are packed. But when is the best time to start planning your next getaway? The answer depends on your destination, your goals, and how much you want to save or splurge. Here’s a guide to help you plan smarter and travel better by choosing the right time of year to start planning.

1. Popularity of the Tour

  • High-Demand Public Tours: If the group tour is to a popular destination or during a peak season (like Europe in the summer or South Africa in the autumn), it’s best to book 12–18 months in advance. For example, our popular tours often fill up due to limited spots, especially because we only run small-group public tours. Our current public tours are listed on our main tour page.
  • Private Tours: If you want to book a private tour, availability is still a variable. For example, our tours include accommodations in boutique hotels or unique lodges, which may have limited availability.

2. Time for Preparation

  • Booking early allows more time to handle logistics, like acquiring visas, renewing passports, getting vaccinations (if necessary), and planning pre- or post-tour extensions (which we highly recommend!).
  • It also gives you time to adjust your budget for the trip or arrange time off work.

3. Flexibility with Flight Arrangements

  • Booking a group tour earlier allows you to align your flights with the tour’s start and end dates. Flight prices are typically cheaper when booked several months in advance, so planning early can save money.

4. Cancellation Policies

  • Always check the tour operator’s cancellation and refund policies. Some group tours offer flexible terms or risk-free bookings if you book early, which can provide peace of mind in case plans change. Our policy states that if we cancel a tour, you can receive a full credit or refund. If you cancel your reservation with 90 days or more advance notice, you can apply all payments to another Taste Vacation in the same calendar year or the following year.

5. Waitlists for Sold-Out Tours

  • If the tour you’re interested in is already sold out, joining a waitlist early may secure your spot if cancellations occur.

Bottom Line

For tours, earlier is always better when it comes to booking. It ensures you get your preferred dates, accommodations, and experiences while potentially saving money with flights. However, for last-minute travelers, staying flexible and monitoring cancellations can still lead to incredible opportunities.

Planning ahead allows you to fully enjoy your trip, free from last-minute stress and logistical hurdles! If you’re ready to start getting excited for your next vacation, email us today!
