South Africa offers a rich tapestry of experiences that go beyond our exclusive South Africa Wine & Safari Vacation. If you’re considering extending your stay (which we definitely suggest you consider!), we’ve compiled a list of must-see attractions and activities to enhance your adventures. From vibrant cities to stunning coastlines and cultural treasures, here are our top recommendations for extending your South African travel:

  • Table Mountain: No visit to Cape Town is complete without taking a cable car ride to the top of Table Mountain. Enjoy panoramic views of the city, coastline, and beyond.
  • V&A Waterfront: This bustling hub offers world-class shopping, dining, and entertainment. Don’t miss the wonderful music and singing happening daily by the water.
  • Robben Island: Take a ferry to this UNESCO World Heritage Site to learn about South Africa’s history and Nelson Mandela’s imprisonment.

2. Visit the Garden Route

  • Knysna: This coastal town is famous for its oysters, lush forests, and the stunning Knysna Heads. Enjoy boat trips, hiking, and wildlife spotting.
  • Plettenberg Bay: Known for its pristine beaches, marine safaris, and adventure activities like bungee jumping and zip-lining.
  • Tsitsikamma National Park: An outdoor enthusiast’s paradise, offering hiking trails, canopy tours, and the breathtaking Storms River Mouth.

4. Embrace Local Culture and History

  • Johannesburg: Explore the vibrant city life, visit the Apartheid Museum, and take a tour of Soweto to learn about South Africa’s complex history.
  • Durban: Known for its beautiful beaches and rich cultural diversity. Don’t miss the bustling Victoria Street Market and the stunning Durban Botanic Gardens.
  • Shakaland: Experience Zulu culture firsthand by visiting this living museum, where you can watch traditional dance performances and learn about Zulu customs and traditions.

5. Relax on the Coast

  • Hermanus: Famous for whale watching, particularly from June to November, Hermanus offers stunning coastal scenery and charming seaside attractions.

6. Visit Victoria Falls

  • Victoria Falls: Extend your adventure to the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe to witness one of the world’s most spectacular natural wonders. Known locally as “The Smoke that Thunders,” Victoria Falls offers breathtaking views, thrilling activities like white-water rafting and bungee jumping, and serene experiences such as sunset cruises on the Zambezi River.

Keep in mind that some of our favorites, like Boulders Beach, Stellenbosh, the Winelands, and more, aren’t listed because they are already included in your South Africa Wine & Safari Vacation.

Maybe I'll do that someday

Maybe I’ll do that Someday….

We are excited to feature a guest post from Carl Landau, host of the popular I Used to be Somebody podcast and Diana Landau the content wrangler and editor for Pickleball Media, who together are also co-authors of the Amazon best-seller Pickle for Dummies. We met Carl and Diana last year when they signed up for a Taste Vacations trip to South Africa, which has evolved into a partnership to create The “I Used to be Somebody World Tour” with the first stop in Tuscany in September and a trip to Portugal in the spring of 2025.

Why do we all do it?! We think about doing something that interests us and then put it off, always for “another day.” We all tend to talk ourselves out of doing things we really want to do. It’s way easier to stay within your comfort zone. I talk about this all the time with my guests on the I Used to be Somebody podcast. You want to do something but it takes too much time. Or costs too much money. Or it’s something new and you don’t know what it’s going to be like. You can easily talk yourself out of anything!

But it’s better at any age to take stock of things. Ask yourself: Realistically, how much time do I think I have on this planet? How many years am I going to be healthy? When else am I going to have the time? If I don’t spend money now on something I really want to do, when am I?

All this hit me 4 years ago when I started our podcast and newsletter. And I’m saying “yes” to a lot more things than I ever have before.  For my wife and me, it’s been travel. We’ve been traveling like crazy and loving it. We’ve learned so much about other countries and cultures. The trips are sort of addicting, (like pickleball?). Both good!

South Africa Wine & SafariJust last month we took the plunge and went on our first small group tour with Taste Vacations to South Africa. The trip blew our minds. We learned about the people, the culture, the landscape, the food, the wine, and the ANIMALS! Like anyone, we were a little nervous doing something so new and going such a long way—those nagging little thoughts about spending too much, the long journey to get there—but we did it anyway and we are so so glad we did. At some point, you just have to say “F*&% it! I am doing it!” Making your dreams a reality is 100% worth it!

It’s one of the reasons why we decided to start hosting vacations with Taste Vacations and their sister company Zephyr Adventures. We’re launching our “I Used to be Somebody World Tour“. Starting in Tuscany in 2024, then heading to Portugal in 2025. We’ve also collaborated to help create Zephyr Adventure’s first pickleball tour with the Arizona Pickleball Adventure in October of 2024. We really want to travel the world. We’ve discovered we like meeting these strangers on the tour who become our new friends. Many are going to be lifelong friendships.

I know you’ve heard it before, but…life is truly short! Instead of ‘maybe I’ll do that someday’ you just need to go for what you want and make it happen.

How to Pack Smartly for Your Next Wine Vacation

By Taste Vacations, Travel Tips, Wine No Comments

Embarking on a wine vacation is an opportunity to indulge in the finest vintages, explore picturesque vineyards, and savor the flavors of new terroirs. Whether you’re journeying to the sun-kissed valleys of Australia or the rolling hills of Tuscany, packing strategically can enhance your wine-tasting experience and ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey. Here are some essential tips to help you pack smartly for your next wine vacation.

Wine Carrier or Protective Packaging

If you plan on bringing home bottles of wine as souvenirs, investing in a sturdy wine carrier or protective packaging is essential. Opt for padded wine bags or specialized wine suitcases designed to safeguard your precious cargo from bumps and bruises during transit. Alternatively, consider collapsible wine bottle protectors that can be inflated and placed in your luggage for added security.

Lightweight Clothing and Comfortable Footwear

All of our wine vacations involve exploring vineyards, attending tastings, and indulging in leisurely walks through picturesque landscapes. Pack lightweight, breathable clothing suitable for varying weather conditions, including comfortable layers for cooler evenings. Don’t forget to include a pair of sturdy yet comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots to navigate uneven terrain with ease.

Sun Protection and Hydration Essentials

Spending extended periods outdoors in wine country calls for adequate sun protection and hydration. Pack sunscreen with a high SPF, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses.

Versatile Daypack or Tote Bag

A versatile daypack or tote bag is indispensable for carrying essentials during your wine excursions. Choose a lightweight, durable bag with ample storage space for sunscreen, water, snacks, a camera or smartphone for capturing memories, and any souvenirs or wine purchases you may acquire along the way. Look for a bag with adjustable straps for added comfort during long walks or hikes.

Wine Journal or Tasting Notes

Keep track of your wine discoveries and tasting experiences by packing a compact wine journal or tasting notes booklet. Jot down your impressions, favorite wines, and memorable moments. Alternatively, utilize a smartphone app designed for wine enthusiasts to record tasting notes and recommendations on the go.

Pack smartly for your wine vacation and you’ll enhance your overall experience and ensure a seamless and enjoyable journey from start to finish. Cheers to your next wine adventure with Taste Vacations!

Taste Facebook Connect

Introducing: Taste Vacations Connect

By Taste Vacations, Travel Tips No Comments

At Taste Vacations all of our private trips require a minimum number of travelers to make the tour a go. Some tours require two people, some four people, some six people, and so on. We realize many hopeful travelers are eager to go on a trip but cannot meet the minimums, so we want to do what we can to help those travelers connect and plan the vacation of their dreams. Introducing, Taste Vacations Connect!

Are you a solo traveler or couple looking for a group to travel with but don’t meet the minimum for a private tour with Taste Vacations? Chances are other like-minded travelers are also thinking about that same tour as you. We have created a space for you to connect and communicate via the Taste Vacations Connect Facebook group!

Here are reasons why we hope our community will enjoy connecting and enthusiastically use this new resource to help them plan their culinary travels:

Overcome Tour Minimums Together

Many of our tours have minimum participant requirements that can be challenging for individual travelers to meet on their own. By joining our Taste Vacations Connect Facebook group, you can team up with fellow enthusiasts to collectively reach the tour minimum and unlock the experience of a private luxury tour.

Connect with Like-Minded Travelers

The Facebook group provides a platform for potential travelers interested in our luxury food, wine, and beer tours to connect with others who share their passion for exploration and indulgence. You don’t need to be a connoisseur to enjoy our tours—you just need enthusiasm and an appetite for new experiences.

Perfect for Solo-Travelers

“I want to travel, but I don’t have anyone to go with” is a common sentiment we hear. People are ‘solo’ travelers for a variety of reasons and we believe it is a title to be enthusiastically celebrated. A group vacation provides a solitary travel experience in a safe and pre-planned format with other travelers who are there for the same reasons you are: to explore and enjoy. You also get more for your money when you have a small group because travel costs for groups are generally offered at better rates, and the tour company gets to pass on the savings to you.

Keeps Group Travel Small

For those of you travelers who love the idea of having someone else plan the itinerary (including special experiences you might not find on your own) and manage the logistics of a vacation so you don’t have to—BUT—you don’t want to have to travel a whole slew of people on a big group trip, the option to connect with like-minded people and craft your own small group experience is ideal for you. You get the benefit of a guided group tour but with just a few other travelers.

Plan Your Dream Tour

You can use the group to discuss tour dates, destinations, and preferences with other members. Once you’ve formed a group that meets the tour minimum, we’ll handle all the logistics to ensure your tour is a seamless and unforgettable experience.

Share Experiences and Tips

Our Facebook group isn’t just for planning future adventures – it’s also a space for past and current tour guests to share their experiences, ask questions, and offer recommendations. This community is here to support and inspire you.

Stay Engaged

The perfect place to leave reviews, share photos, and connect with our team directly.

We love working with potential Taste travelers seeking wine, beer, and food vacations and are invested in doing what we can to support everyone in getting out to savor the world. If you have been interested in a Taste Vacation tour, but have run into not meeting a minimum number of travelers, this group is made for you to connect and find other travelers in the same position.

Please join Taste Vacations Connect by requesting access to the Facebook group. and get the conversations and vacation planning started! Once you find travel companions and meet your tour minimum, let us know, and we’ll take care of the rest.
